Madeira offers some of Europe's most spectacular hiking, combining dramatic mountain scenery, lush laurel forests (UNESCO World Heritage), coastal cliffs, and the unique levada irrigation channels that create trails through otherwise inaccessible terrain.
With over 3,000 km of levadas and dozens of official PR (Percursos Recomendados) routes, there's a trail for every ability level—from easy family walks to challenging mountain climbs.

PR1 - Vereda do Pico Ruivo OPEN
Summit trail to Pico Ruivo (1,862m), Madeira's highest peak. Spectacular 360-degree views. Can be combined with PR1.1 from Achada do Teixeira (easier access).

Levada do Norte
Longest levada on the island, running from east to west. You can walk different sections of varying difficulty. Beautiful views and lush vegetation.
Access Points: Multiple entry points along the north coast
Levada dos Tornos
Popular levada walk around Monte area near Funchal. Wide paths, beautiful gardens, and city views. Great for beginners.

Levada do Caniçal
Peaceful levada walk on the eastern side of Madeira with ocean views. Less crowded and very scenic. Close to our property!

Hidden gem levada walk with waterfalls and lush vegetation. Less touristy but equally beautiful. Great escape from crowds.

WE ARE DIRECTLY ON THIS LEVADA! Just 2 minutes walk from your accommodation - step out the door and start hiking! We're located halfway between the start and end points, so you can hike in either direction. Beautiful valley views and agricultural terraces.

Levada da Morena ⭐
Walkable levada near Santa Cruz, close to our property! Often combined with Levada dos Tornos for a longer hike. Unofficial trail - check local conditions before heading out.
Start: Santa Cruz area (20 min from property)
Levada Nova de Machico (Portelinha-Landeiro)
Medium difficulty trail near Machico with some vertigo-inducing sections. Features irregular terrain at altitudes between 289m-347m. A more adventurous option close to our area.

Levada da Portela
Mostly flat and easily walkable levada for a peaceful nature walk. Open year-round with good conditions as of 2025. May be slightly overgrown in places but generally well-accessible.

Levada Poço do Arvoredo
Tranquil unofficial levada near Porto da Cruz showcasing traditional irrigation system. Features lush vegetation and moss-covered walls along a peaceful path.

Besides levadas, Madeira offers stunning coastal and mountain trails that are FREE and don't require reservations:
Vereda do Larano 🌊
Spectacular coastal cliff path from Caniçal to Porto da Cruz. Dramatic ocean views, traditional agricultural terraces. Regularly used by local guides - well-maintained despite being unofficial.

Ponta do Clérigo 🌊
Coastal hike near Santana/Faial with steep climbs but rewarding ocean views. Unofficial trail, surprisingly tiring despite short distance.

Penha de Águia (Eagle Rock) ⛰️
Steep climb to the top of Eagle Rock between Faial and Porto da Cruz. Municipal trail (well-marked but unofficial). 435m elevation gain - spectacular views from the summit!

Recommendation: If you're new to Madeira hiking, start with official PR routes. Once experienced, explore unofficial levadas with a local guide or experienced hikers.
Essential Hiking Information
What to Bring
- Footwear: Hiking boots or trail runners with good grip (paths can be wet)
- Clothing: Layers (temperature changes with elevation), rain jacket
- Flashlight: Headlamp or flashlight essential for tunnel routes (PR9, etc.)
- Water: 1-2 liters per person minimum
- Food: Snacks, energy bars, lunch for longer hikes
- Navigation: Phone with downloaded offline maps or GPS device
- First Aid: Basic kit with blister treatment, pain relief
- Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
Safety Tips
- Check weather forecast before departing—avoid trails during heavy rain or fog

- Stay on marked paths—levada edges can be slippery and dangerous
- Tell someone your hiking plans and expected return time

Best Time for Hiking
- Year-round hiking: Madeira's climate allows hiking 12 months a year
- Best months: April-October (dryer, clearer weather)
- Winter (Nov-Mar): More rain, but still hikeable with proper gear
- Best time of day: Early morning (6-9 AM start) for fewer crowds and better light
- Avoid: Midday heat in summer, afternoon clouds on mountain trails

- Closest to us: PR8 (Ponta de São Lourenço) is only 20 minutes away and spectacular
- Most iconic: PR1 (Pico Ruivo) and PR9 (Caldeirão Verde) for the classic Madeira experience
- Less crowded gem: PR10 (Levada do Rei) offers beauty without the crowds
- Parking: Arrive early for popular trails—parking fills up by 10 AM on weekends
- Lunch stops: Ribeiro Frio has great trout restaurants after PR11
- Guided tours: Consider a guide for your first challenging trail or tunnel route
